Mark Rippetoe, the author of Starting Strength, has worked in the fitness industry since 1978. He was a competitive powerlifter for ten years and after he retired, "Rip" coached national and international-level athletes as well as Olympic weightlifters in the US. He coaches the sport on a daily basis at the Wichita Falls Athletic Club, his own gym in Texas, and conducts seminars all over the country.
